Turkiye closes airspace to flights to and from an airport in Kurdish-controlled northern Iraq due to alleged Kurdish militant activity, according to Foreign Ministry Spokesman Tanju Bilgic. The closure was in response to increased activities of the banned Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in Suleimaniyah, including its “infiltration” into the airport. The decision comes after a helicopter crash in northern Iraq that killed Kurdish militants on board and fueled claims that the PKK possessed helicopters. The Turkish airspace will remain closed until July 3.
