Child Labor rises sharply in Aden amid severe economic conditions

Child labor has sharply risen in Yemen’s southern port city of Aden since the outbreak of war eight years ago amid severe economic conditions. Yemen’s official reports said that the proportion of child workers under 15 years of age jumped to 80 percent in 2022 from 30 percent in 2015.

Yemen’s currency devaluation and losing jobs forced families to send their children to work in dangerous jobs like mechanic workshops to earn a living.

A social specialist told A24 News Agency’s reporter that many children work in very hazardous jobs like selling tissue paper on the streets, welding and washing cars.

He urged parents to send their children to schools for education instead of working in dangerous jobs.
