Thousands of people, once supporters of Peru’s current president Pedro Castillo, have taken to the streets nationwide, demanding a salary increase, job opportunities, and fair prices for basic foodstuffs.
The protests come at a time when Peru is already suffering from high inflation and the president’s popularity is low.
Other protesters called for changing the Constitution, fighting corruption, and renovating worker-related laws. Opponents of the left-wing president also joined the nationwide protests.
Enver León, Sec. General of El Nuevo Perú, urged the government to listen to the people’s demands, threatening that the government has not the right to act in whatever manner it wants.
Meanwhile, extreme poverty continues to grow in the face of protests that do not resolve the country’s political conflicts due to the rise in minerals, oil, and basic necessities.
Jimmy Ventura, the representative of the union of the construction workers, said they protested against the rising prices and urged the current administration to work for the sake of the truth and workers.
