Cambodia: Myanmar crisis cannot pull us back

Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Prak Sokhonn clarified that the crisis in Myanmar cannot be an obstacle and cooperation is needed to find a resolution for the challenges.

According to a press release issued by the Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on January 29, DPM Sokhonn met with the President of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), Mona Juul, on January 28. The Deputy Prime Minister briefed the Council on the current situation in Myanmar.

After highlighting the complexities of the situation in Myanmar and the recent developments in the country’s political, security and humanitarian issues, Deputy Prime Minister Sokhonn briefed the Council on ASEAN’s efforts and commitment to resolving the Myanmar crisis, particularly the outcome of the recent visit of Prime Minister Hun Sen. The Council was also informed on the progress of the implementation of Five-Point Consensus (5PC).

DPM Sokhonn highlighted the main objectives of the Prime Minister’s visit, including: Finding ways toward the implementation of the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus and finding the end of the violence, facilitate the visit of the ASEAN Special Envoy and dialogue and ensure the safe and prompt delivery of humanitarian assistance to Myanmar.

The Deputy Prime Minister stressed that “all our activities are based on the spirit of the Five-Point Census and the ASEAN Charter.”

“There are still many problems and challenges besides the crisis in Myanmar that ASEAN needs to address,” he said, adding that in addition to the welfare of the region as a whole, we cannot allow the crisis in Myanmar to drag us backwards.
