Cambodian PM called on people not to panic about Omicron COVID variant

The PM made his remarks this morning at the inauguration of wastewater treatment systems in Preah Sihanouk province.

The PM stated, “Even though Omicron has arrived, I would like to emphasize that we should not panic, do not panic until we lose control.

Now, South Africa itself confirms that it is okay.’

The PM also stated that because Cambodia does not have flights with South Africa, there is no need to close flights with South Africa.

He also said that he wants to reconsider the ban on 10 African countries from entering Cambodia

The Prime Minister stated that these 10 countries do not currently have direct flights to Cambodia, but in the event of a transit passenger arriving in Cambodia, officials stationed at the international airport must strengthen PCR testing measures.

The PM said that there is a need to increase testing for travelers from these countries.

The PM also stated that the change in attitude through the lifting of the ban and the strengthening of health measures is to avoid discriminatory behavior against those African countries, while Cambodia has also announced the reopening of international tourist destinations.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) in Cambodia, the new mutant virus B.1.1.529 or Omicron was first reported to the WHO by South Africa on the 24th. November 2021.

The first laboratory-confirmed case of the new omega-2 mutation virus was detected on a sample collected on November 9, 2021.

Infections in South Africa have risen sharply in recent weeks with the discovery of the new mutation virus.

Omicron can mutate into a large number of viruses, and preliminary evidence suggests that the new mutation poses a higher risk than other mutations.
