Shepherds and cattle breeders in Najaf are facing financial hardships as they grapple to sell their domestic sheep while other affordable sheep- smuggled from Iran are being sold. Hussin Ali, a shepherd, illustrated that they feed and spend hefty amounts on their cattle to no avail, as they incurred hefty losses that amount to thousands because of the smuggled affordable cattle. A kilo of local sheep meat costs about 4,500 Iraqi dinars ($ 3.6), while a kilo of Iranian sheep meat costs 3,500 dinars ($ 2.8)
