Mongolians condemn the Chinese decision to ban the teaching of the Mongolian language in schools in Inner Autonomous Mongolia, northern China. Last summer, these regions experienced demonstrations with the Chinese police due to the Chinese government’s orders to extend the teaching of the Chinese language (Mandarin) and marginalize the Mongolian language in the schools of Inner Mongolia, whose residents are Mongolian. Meanwhile, the coordinators of the “Save the Mongolian language” NGO campaign are exerting their efforts at the local and international levels to save the Mongolian language in the regions of Inner Mongolia. Since its inception in June 2020, they started a petition to sign on social media and it collected 100,000 signatures aiming to discuss this issue at the international level and in partnership with Amnesty International, they sent letters to more than 170 countries around the world under urgent action to support Mongolians, stressing that they will continue their work to provide children and youth with knowledge of their mother tongue, their history, and culture.
