US House leader and Taiwan president united against China

Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen and US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy met in California to show a united front against China’s aggression towards Taiwan. The rare high-level bipartisan meeting comes at a crucial time as China intensifies its military and diplomatic pressure on the island nation it claims as part of its territory. The meeting is the highest-level audience a sitting Taiwanese president has received on US soil, underscoring the strengthening ties between Taipei and Washington. While China has vowed to take “strong and resolute measures” against the meeting, it has so far remained restrained. Under Washington’s “One China” policy, the US acknowledges China’s position that Taiwan is part of China, but it is bound by law to provide the democratic island with the means to defend itself.
