Public discontent with shortage of foodstuffs and high prices as New Year’s Day approaches

National Chamber for Confectionery in capital Tunis has confirmed that about 40% of establishments specialized in manufacturing confectionery have closed down in December, due to the lack of sugar, milk and oil in Tunisian markets.

Shortage of sugar and rise in prices of other basic commodities has caused a crisis that is stifling the markets, especially during this period, as the last weeks of December are the peak of business season for these institutions, who might not be able this year to provide the amount of confectionery needed for the New Year celebrations.

Citizens expressed their dissatisfaction with the lack of basic foodstuffs and their high prices, as they are forced to make sweets at home to celebrate New Year’s Day.
