Tunisians are struggling with the continuous rise in prices of various basic commodities and foodstuffs, especially for those with low incomes. The latest price increase was for water supply from the water distribution company, in an effort to cover the cost of production and maintenance, according to concerned authorities.
Officials in the Consumer Defense Organization believe that the increase in price of water supply is justifiable in light of Tunisia’s water scarcity due to climate changes, noting that this increase targets citizens with water consumption of more than 40 cubic meters, as the government has kept prices for citizens with low water consumption unchanged.
Citizens told A24 that the increase in price of water supply is due to recent lack of rain in Tunisia and lack of water in dams, stressing the need to reduce water consumption in order to overcome this crisis.
