With only two hours of electricity a day -Aden residents flee homes to escape high temperatures

The lack of fuel to run power stations is worsening the electricity crisis in Aden. With power cuts lasting up to sixteen hours, many citizens are forced to leave their homes just to catch a slight gulf breeze. “Electricity sector officials keep saying the electric power system will improve, but the opposite is true because power cuts have increased,” Aden resident Abdul-Jalil Al-Shamiri told A24. Last month the World Bank approved an additional US$100 million for the second phase of the Yemen Emergency Electricity Access Project. The program aims to improve access to electricity to restore the country’s power sector. But the ongoing power shortage influences the provisions of other services, especially water utilities, as the pumping stations require an electricity supply. Sunday’s high in Aden was 31°C. With humidity levels pushing towards 70 percent, residents say they are reaching the end of their ability to tolerate the power outages.
