US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi will arrive in Singapore on Monday (Aug 1) for a two-day visit, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) confirmed on Sunday.
Pelosi is leading a six-member congressional delegation on a trip to Asia, which will also include stops in Japan, Malaysia and South Korea.
During the trip in Singapore, the delegation will call on President Halimah Yacob and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, and meet with a number of Cabinet Ministers.
In a tweet on Sunday, Pelosi said the aim of her trip was to “reaffirm America’s unshakeable commitment to our allies and friends in the region”.
“In Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan, we’ll hold high-level meetings to discuss how we can further our shared interests and values,” she said.
These include peace and security, economic growth and trade, the COVID-19 pandemic, the climate crisis, human rights and democratic governance, she added.
A press release issued by Pelosi’s office on Sunday said the trip “will focus on mutual security, economic partnership and democratic governance in the Indo-Pacific region”.
