People in Yemen’s southern port city of Aden are struggling to afford animals to sacrifice due to their high prices ahead of Eid al-Adha, or the feast of sacrifice which falls next Saturday. Many sacrificial animals are sold at prices ranging from US$150 to $300, ahead of the Eid festival, when Muslims will sacrifice sheep, goats, camels or calves to distribute meat to family, friends and the poor. Citizens said the Muslim festival is no longer a source of joy in Aden, where Price hikes, delayed salary payments, and devaluation of the local currency, cause the absence of Eid manifestations. The seven-year war has devastated Yemen’s economy, exacerbating an urgent humanitarian crisis with millions of Yemenis on the brink of starvation.
