Indonesia’s Jokowi leaves for visits to China, Japan and South Korea

Indonesian President Joko Widodo left Jakarta on Monday (Jul 25) for Beijing, China, where he is scheduled to meet President Xi Jinping on Tuesday.

He will also have a meeting with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang.

Besides China, Widodo will visit Japan on Wednesday and South Korea on Thursday during his regional tour.

On his social media accounts, Widodo said: “The three countries are Indonesia’s strategic partners in the field of economy, ASEAN’s important partners, and important partners in the context of the G20.”

“I will meet with the leaders of China, Japan and South Korea to discuss a number of issues, such as regional and global issues, as well as cooperation in the fields of trade, investment, health, infrastructure and fisheries.”

Indonesia is currently the rotating president of the G20 and its leader’s summit will be held in Bali this November.

Jokowi, as the president is popularly known, is the first foreign leader to visit China since the Winter Olympics in February as the country adopts a strict “zero COVID-19” policy resulting in limited visits of officials from overseas.

China is Indonesia’s largest trading partner with a total trade value of US$110 billion last year.

Apart from meeting the leaders of Japan and Korea, Jokowi is slated to meet the business community while in Tokyo and Seoul.
