The demand for some types of foods and sweets increases during the month of Ramadan, the most prominent is Qatayef. In the Deir al-Balah market in the central Gaza Strip, Um Iyad has been making and selling Qatayef during Ramadan for about 25 years.
She owns a small stall in the middle of the market, which is a destination for many residents of the area. She supports her family after the death of her husband, working with her sons, amid the difficult economic conditions in Gaza in general.
