Cambodia: Six detained for torture and extortion of Vietnamese nationals

Police have arrested a group of six suspects in connection with the detention, torture, extortion and illegal stockpiling of weapons at Sihanoukville.

Preah Sihanouk Provincial Police Commissioner Major General Chuon Narin said that on January 30, 2022, the road traffic police force reported that while roadblocks were being established for routine checks a black STAREX with license plate Phnom Penh 2BA-7054 drove fast and hit the checkpoint.

Preah Sihanouk Provincial Police cooperated with Prey Nup District Police Inspectorate and Road Traffic Police to intercept the vehicle. As a result of the search, police found 2 gas guns, 11 pairs of handcuffs, two electric cattle prods,  and detained six Vietnamese suspects, including one female.

Lt. Gen. Narin said that after interrogation, police discovered that the six are connected to the kidnapping of three Vietnamese women and holding them for a ransom of about $35,000  and fled to Sihanoukville where they were arrested.

The seized items include a black STAREX car with license plate Phnom Penh 2BA-7054, 2 gas guns, 11 pairs of handcuffs, 2 electric batons, 3 electric flashlights. The Office of Minor Criminal Police is continuing to investigate the case.
