Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for Myanmar, Dr Noeleen Hayzer has expressed commitment to work with Cambodia who serves as ASEAN Chair for 2022 to find a solution for the violence plaguing Myanmar.
Due to the important role ASEAN plays in the de-escalation of the conflict and violence taking place in the military junta-ruled nation, the special envoy stated that she is willing to work with the ASEAN Chair in conflict resolution for Myanmar.
The statement was made during a video conference with Prime Minister Hun Sen on the morning of January 13.
The Minister Delegate to the Prime Minister, Kao Kim Hourn, said that during the meeting, Special Envoy Hayzer congratulated Prime Minister Hun Sen on assuming chairmanship of ASEAN in 2022.
The Dr Hayzer underlined her readiness to help strengthen regional efforts in implementing the “Five-Point Consensus.” She also expressed that she is pleased with the immediate action taken by the Prime Minister, given the urgency of the issue.
Prime Minister Hun Sen expressed his desire to work together with the Special Envoy and congratulated her appointment as Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for Myanmar.
The Prime Minister spoke about his recent visit to Myanmar, which is important not to deviate from the ASEAN Charter and the “Five-Point Consensus.” Mr Hun Sen also emphasized that although in 2021, the work of ASEAN did not go smoothly, so Cambodia is resolved fulfill its responsibilities as ASEAN Chair in 2022.
The Prime Minister said that the purpose of his visit to Myanmar in the past was to find a way to end the violence and achieve a ceasefire, which is the next step is to provide humanitarian assistance to the people of Myanmar.
