The Royal Cambodian Army commander Lieutenant General Hun Manet, who was recently nominated as the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP)’s Prime Minister candidate, highlighted the party’s achievement in saving people’s lives on four major occasions and blasted the opposition groups for urging the international community to sanction the country.

Speaking to party officials and supporters during a ceremony to recognize the party central youth working group in Kampong Cham province’s Batheay district on Sunday, Lt Gen Manet said his party has saved the lives of the people from four major catastrophes.

Highlighting the four major catastrophes, he said the CPP members must be proud of the party because, under the leadership of Prime Minister Hun Sen, the CPP first overthrew the genocidal regime of Pol Pot’s Democratic Kampuchea, immediately ending the massacre on January 7, 1979.

Stressing the second point, he said immediately after the overthrow of the Pol Pot regime, the party strived to rebuild the country from scratch, rebuilding its economy and agriculture, saving its people from famine and starvation.

“Thirdly, we saved the lives of Cambodians from killing each other through a win-win policy, bringing about 100% peace throughout the country in 1998,” he added.

Additionally, Lt Gen Manet noted to save the lives of the people from the deadly virus of Covid-19, the party made the right decision to seek vaccines to be given to the people free of charge, abundant and timely, as well as purchased medicine and medical equipment for the effective treatment of patients.

“Without vaccines, drugs, and timely measures to control and prevent the spread of Covid-19, tens of thousands more lives would have been lost and there would not be the reopening and rehabilitation of the economy and employment,” he said.

“In the fight against Covid-19, Samdech Techo (Mr Hun Sen) took the lives of his children and grandchildren as an example to show confidence in vaccines and treatment methods to the public.”

Lt Gen Manet also blasted unnamed opposition groups but seemed to refer to leaders of the court-dissolved Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP).

He said during the Covid-19 situation, some politicians did not ask foreigners to provide vaccines to their own people but instead asked the international community to cut off aid or impose sanctions on Cambodia to make people who were being severely affected by the pandemic to be even more affected.

During the implementation of the government’s lockdown measures to curb the Covid-19 outbreak in Phnom Penh and Takhmao city, former opposition leader Sam Rainsy had urged people to disobey the authority’s instruction.

He even accused the government of starving people through the strict measures enforced to curb the Covid-19 community outbreak and called people to stand up against the government over strict lockdown measures for a few weeks if the measures were not lifted.
