Cambodian workers are starting to cross the borders to work legally in Thailand’s Chanthaburi Province, as the Thai authorities plan to accept 20,000 Cambodian workers.
Cambodian and Thai authorities cooperated to bring a small number of Cambodian workers through the border checkpoint in Chanthaburi Province to work according to the stipulations set by the Thai authorities.
The Deputy Immigration Officer at Ban Lem International Port, Prak Sam Dara, said that the process of sending Cambodian workers has only legally sent 20 Cambodians into Thailand, since its start on September 9 until December 8. All of the people sent had a Thai employer as a guarantor.
The immigration official stated that sending workers to work in Thailand through a company with a Thai employer to guarantee is a part of a test for the cooperation of Battambang and Chanthaburi. If the process is successful, Thailand will accept 20,000 Cambodians to work in Chanthaburi.
However, Dara said that there are only a small number of Cambodian workers who want to work in Chanthaburi through the company.
The plans to accept the large number into the Thai province came after a meeting between Thai and Cambodian officials to help Cambodians find work in Thailand and to increase the labour force in Thailand legally.
Workers who decide to work in Thailand must comply with certain conditions: such as having a guarantor, quarantine, and Covid-19 tests.
