In the war-ridden region, leishmaniasis disease, locally known as the ‘Aleppo Boil’ (CL) has been spreading drastically, reaching a total of 16500 cases across the villages located on the banks of the Al Khabour River. The parasitic disease, transmitted by the bites of sandflies, found an ideal environment for spreading amid lack of waste management and open sewerage across the river, which dried up and turned into a landfill, forming swamps of stale water. Furthermore, the soaring number of cases can be attributed to the lack of any insecticides. The is exacerbated by the fact that treatment is only offered by humanitarian organizations that might discontinue at any moment.
