Cambodia raises minimum wage for second year in a row

According to the Minister of Labour, the minimum wage in the country was raised again this year, marking the second consecutive year that it was raised.

This was stated by the Cambodian Minister of Labour and Vocational Training, Ith Sam Heng.

While addressing the participants of the opening ceremony of the Global Wage Report 2020-2021 on the morning of December 15.

The Minister stated that Cambodia has continued to raise the minimum wage for two years in a row in 2020 and 2021, as regional and rival countries have postponed or failed to provide minimum wage negotiations during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The raising of the minimum wage is indicative of the government’s commitment to ensuring and maintaining the livelihoods of the country’s working force. It is the latest addition to the Royal Government’s endeavor to improve working conditions and the livelihoods of workers in the country.

The livelihood improvement projects are based in the approach of assessing the balance between negative social, economic, and employment impacts on the sustainability of factories and enterprises.

The workshop on Dissemination of the Global Wage Report 2020-2021 aims to raise awareness and update more information on the development of the regional minimum wage system, as well as ways to strengthen labor market institutions and policies and effective wage policy in during the pandemic.

The workshop also highlighted the continued active support of the International Labour Organization (ILO) with the Royal Government in contributing to the development of employment and vocational training.

The Minister also mentioned that this workshop is a new vision in the field of labor, which reflects the importance of the National Council for the Minimum Wage to contribute to improving the living standards of workers and the harmony of industrial relations.
