Despite the invincible siege imposed on Gaza, Maher Abu Hadaf insists on pursuing his passion in breeding ornamental birds. Through Israel-run border crossings, he imports those birds, and sometimes he even smuggles birds’ eggs to then put them in hatcheries for reproduction. It is highly expensive to import some species as it might cost 100 dollars. However, bird lovers are grappling with many obstacles in Gaza. The top of which is the frequent power outages that usually force them into using batteries to operate powered hatcheries. It is worth mentioning that some make a living by bird breeding.
