Authorities have asked tourists to stay alert, be careful and strictly follow the health measures for the upcoming international New Year celebrations to avoid any incidents.

Siem Reap provincial deputy-governor Ly Samrith said yesterday that the holiday is comparable to the Water Festival holiday, more tourists are expected to visit this province for the upcoming New Year event.

He said that after the Prime Minister announced the end of the February 20 Community Event, provincial authorities organized the upcoming New Year holiday that will take place from December 30 to January 1, 2022.

“Despite the end of the February 20 Community Event, we want to warn people who will travel during the New Year holiday to domestic destinations, especially to Siem Reap, that they must always follow the health measures strictly,” said Samrith.

“We are grateful when people always wear masks and use sanitizing spray whenever they are in a public space,” Samrith said.

Moreover, he recommends tourists visit some ecotourism communities in Siem Reap province like Changkran Roi ecotourism community where provincial authorities will organize an event.

Samrith said: “I would like to ask people to be careful when visiting tourist destinations and the authorities will release an announcement soon about the measures for prevention to let people travel happily.”

Mondulkiri provincial governor Thong Savun said that all hotels and bungalows are fully booked for the upcoming New Year celebration.

He said: “We haven’t released any new measures for the upcoming holiday yet, however, we will still implement the health measures strictly like what we have done since the start of reopening the country.”

“I hope all tourists will keep following up and not be over-relaxed. Authorities will keep checking with the tourism businesses to make sure everything is going well like the implementation of hygiene and SOPs,” Savun said.

Battambang provincial deputy governor Soeum Bunrith said that the province isn’t organizing any events for the upcoming New Year celebration but if tourists come to visit, they must follow the health measures strictly without neglect which can cause an outbreak.

He said: “Wearing a mask, spraying sanitizer and keeping a safe distance are still methods that we have to practice every day during this time even if the situation is starting to get better.”

“Omicron is starting to cause fear in people with its fast transmission so people must be responsible and not be lazy,” he said.
