Water Festival attracts more than 900k tourists

As restrictions are lifted throughout the country, this year’s Water Festival draws in more than 900,000 tourists.

With Cambodia having successfully reduced Covid-19 cases, residents and citizens stepped out of their homes to visit tourist attractions in the country.

The Ministry of Tourism reported that from November 18 to November 20, 910,150 people traveled to enjoy the holidays. Of that number, 899,869 are nationals, and 10,281 are foreigners.

The figures were released by the ministry on the morning of November 21. The report continued that on the first day of the festival, the country recorded 132,103 tourists, on the second day there was a reported increase of 152.15 percent, with 332,875 holidaymakers.

The third day was by far the busiest day of the festival with a reported increase of 33.76 percent compared to the second day and 237.28 compared to the first day. The ministry reported that there were 445,262 tourists.

Phnom Penh capital remained the top destination among the tourists, followed by the provinces of Siem Reap, Preah Sihanouk, Kampot, Kep, Pursat, Battambang, Kampong Speu, Mondulkiri, Kandal, and Ratanakiri, the Ministry of Tourism stated.

Despite the cancellation of the traditional boat racing in the capital over Covid-19 spread fear, droves of people from the provinces still flocked to Phnom Penh to enjoy the holidays.
