Sukhothai to hold Candle Festival on Nov. 18 as new form of celebration

Sukhothai is scheduled to hold the Loi Krathong Festival, Candle Lighting, and Fire Playing, as a new form of celebration for the year 2021 in order to experience the atmosphere of the beautifully decorated World Heritage site.

On November 1 evening, Mr. Wirun Phantavee, the Governor of Sukhothai Province, along with relevant government agencies organized a press conference at Wat Mahathat Sukhothai Historical Park to discuss the Loi Krathong Festival, which is scheduled to be held from November 18 to 21, 2021, at Sukhothai Historical Park.

The event aims to conserve the heritage, convey the unique identity of Sukhothai city as well as attract tourists in order for the economy to flourish.

The event focuses on decorating the area around the ancient site of Wat Mahathat with Light Up decorated lights to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the World Heritage City. The decoration of “terracotta wands” lights up thousands of candles making a whole area even more beautiful with lantern decoration and a Landmark for tourists to take pictures to keep the impression and disseminate to the online social world.

This activity will be held in open spaces, refrain from selling food to avoid touching and crowding. It will be celebrated in congestion with the second anniversary of Sukhothai, the city of creativity for handicrafts and folk arts of UNESCO.

The province operates events under new tourism measures in order to prevent the COVID-19 outbreak, which has resulted in suspending light activities and sound shows, entertainment events, and food sales within the fair to reduce congestion in the area.

Online registration is open for visitors from November 8-16, 2021. The event expects to welcome approximately 15,000 visitors per day.

The event includes handicrafts and folk arts activities of Sukhothai; it is accessible and highly appreciated on social media.
