Iraq’s Minister of Youth and Sport: Illiteracy and Drug Use Reach an Alarming Rate
In a discussion held with senior political, economic, and sports figures, Iraq’s Minister of Youth and Sport Adnan Dirjal has shed light on the unprecedented challenges that threaten youths and the reality of the sport. He attributed the gloomy sports’ status quo to the growing ignorance and illiteracy; hitting a new number of 10 million illiterate people, not to mention that the number of drug users and dealers has surged to an alarming rate, especially in the middle and the southern Euphrates regions. In this regard, he mentioned that the reality of the sport can’t be separated from these threats, adding that when he assumed the ministry’s affairs, the budget was out of funds, leaving him with no resources to support sports clubs.
