A group of more than 30 Cambodians was sent back to their country after illegally crossing the border into Thailand.

The Cambodian Consulate General, assisted by the Thai authorities sent the Cambodians to their home country on October 24 at midnight. This is according to the Spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cambodia, Koy Kuong.

The group was smuggled by brokers across one of the illegal border entry points. The group numbered 38 people (9 females.)

This is the newest of the epidemic of Cambodians taking the treacherous trek through Cambodian forest and evading authorities of both countries in order to find jobs in Thailand. As the pandemic is still going on in Cambodia, the number of people trying to cross into Thailand through backdoors stays consistent with no decline in sight.

The lack of jobs in Cambodia is a driving force in the influx of Cambodians, particularly those in the rural areas, to pay brokers to sneak them across the border into Thailand. More often than not they are caught by either Thai or Cambodian authorities, while the brokers escape and make off with the money that is paid to them.

Cambodian officials appealed to the people to not attempt to cross the borders illegally due to the pandemic. With the Cambodians who attempt to cross the border illegally always traveling in groups, the probability that they might infect others in their group with Covid-19 is high.
