A Siem Reap woman has admitted that she faked the robbery of $22,000 to hide from her husband the fact that she had spent the money.
The 47 year old woman, residing in Ta Phok village, Bakong commune, Prasat Bakong district, Siem Reap province, had originally claimed that she had been the victim of a robbery by persons unknown.
However, under intense scrutiny from Prasat Bakong police, her story began to unravel and she confessed to the crime admitting that she had stolen the proceeds from a land sale and fabricated a false robbery to escape the anger of her husband.
‘I admit that I actually invented it myself, for fear that my husband would find out that I had spent all his money and did not tell him. Realizing that I did this illegally, I would like to apologize to the authorities at all levels and ask for forgiveness and forgive me.
From now on, I will stop doing this or doing anything else that is against the law or causes unrest to affect social security. If I do not comply with the above contract, I will be responsible before the law in force.’
Colonel Lim Sambath, Police Inspector of Prasat Bakong District commented on the case, saying:
‘The seriousness of the investigation lasted almost all night. As a result, it was a case of fabrication and falsification of the story of being robbed of money.’
It is not known what the woman spent the money on – or indeed, what the reaction of her husband was to the missing $22,000.
