Prime Minister Hun Sen has called on the Ministry of Education to allow the reopening of public and state universities throughout the country following the reopening of schools.

In a voice message this morning, the Premier said that the government is already reopening schools in phases and thus the Ministry should also allow the reopening of universities.

“Yesterday, I allowed Ministry of Education to re-open public and state universities,” he added.

Recently, schools from grades 9 to 12 were reopened but with strict adherence to health measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

The Prime Minister also in his message said that the people will still get to have the holidays for Pchum Ben festival so that they can travel and visit resorts but must follow the Covid-19 health preventive measures although the traditional ceremonies at the pagodas are suspended.

He reiterated that he was forced to suspend the Dak Ben and Pchum Ben traditional ceremonies in pagodas due to Covid-19 cases detected among those in pagodas and also worshippers.

“With the spread of the Delta variant, I have to suspend the ceremonies for the safety of the people and to avert a community outbreak,” he said.

“On behalf of the country I am leading, I cannot stand to see people infected with the deadly disease falling ill and dying. Please understand my difficult decision. Please take care of your life as you can celebrate next time,” said Mr Hun Sen.

Within three days of the celebration, he said some 800 people have been infected and more than 20 had died.

“I know some people are questioning why some are dying inspite of being vaccinated. Although you are vaccinated, you must strictly adhere to the 3 dos and 3 don’ts. You must protect yourself against being infected with the virus,” said Mr Hun Sen.

Till date, he added more than 13 million people from the age of six have been vaccinated.

The Premier also advised those celebrating Pchum Ben not to take alms and food to pagodas as he does not want an outbreak nor senior citizens to be infected with the disease.
