Two killed, many injured in poll violence in Bangladesh

Two people have been killed as violence broke out in polling centers amid Union Parishad (UP) elections in Cox’s Bazar’s Moheshkhali and Kutubdia Upazilas on Monday.

It has been reported that a shootout took place around 11:00 am at a polling station in Kutubjom UP of Moheshkhali upazila, leaving a man named Abul Kalam dead. Five others were sustained bullet injuries in the incident.

The deceased was a supporter of Abul Kalam Mosharraf Hossain Khokon.

Moheshkhali Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Returning Officer Mahfuzur Rahman confirmed the matter.

According to police sources, polling has been postponed in two centers due to the clashes. In Moheshkhali’s Kutubjom UP  election, supporters of candidate Sheikh Kamal locked into an argument with those of opposition candidate Mosharaf Hossain Khokon over vote fraud. Later, a shootout took place between the two sides, leaving Abul Kalam shot dead on the spot.

Cox’s Bazar Superintendent of Police Md Hasanuzzaman said that situation is now under control and voting likely to start soon.
