An Amtrak passenger train that runs between Seattle and Chicago derailed in Montana on Saturday, killing at least three of the passengers and leaving many injured.
It is mentioned that the train carried out more than 150 people. Based on the number of injuries who had been taken to the hospital, an estimated number of 30 people were injured in the incident, Liberty County Sheriff Nick Erickson said, most of them were minor.
Eight of the train’s 10 cars derailed about 4 p.m. local time near Joplin, Mont., nearly 200 miles north of Helena, Amtrak said in a statement. There were “approximately” 141 passengers and 16 crew members on the train, the statement said. Passengers and crew were among those injured, Amtrak said.
As of Saturday evening, all passengers and crew had been taken by buses to hotels in nearby Shelby; others were driven on a bus to a school gym in nearby Chester.
The number of people injured was unclear as emergency officials grappled with the severity and size of the derailment in a rural part of the state where medical resources are thin.
