Galenigama Interchange cashier arrested

The cashier attached to the Galenigama Interchange of the Southern highway was arrested yesterday after 60 days for allegedly defrauding some Rs. 1.4 million from two safes of the Interchange booth office.

Police Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said that the police only recovered Rs.384,000 out of the Rs. 1.4 million from the suspect’s possession.

The Bandaragama Police launched investigations following a complaint by a Chief Engineer of the highway that a chief cashier who was in charge of collections vanished with the money.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Rs. 1,418,500 in cash was stolen from the cashiers’ safe and the daily collection box.

According to the investigating officials, the arrestee had used the stolen money to settle his personal debts.

The suspect is to be produced before the Panadura Magistrate.
