On the anniversary of the monstrous Simele Massacre, the Syriac Writers Union held a vigil to commemorate its victims, which was attended by high-profile figures and public masses. The vigil aims at conveying a message of the grave necessity to address Assyrians’ agony and many stalled issues, not to mention their demand to bring justice for the victims and to pave the way to enshrine brotherhood among members of the society. It is worth mentioning that Simele Massacre was perpetrated by the Iraqi government against Assyrian Christians, an ethnic minority group who lives in Simele. This was coupled with burning down 63 villages around Mosul. The 1933 massacre marks the first genocide to occur in the history of Iraq
