Former Mongolian Prime Minister Ukhnaa Khurelsukh is the country’s sixth democratically elected President, cementing the power of the ruling Mongolian People’s Party (MPP). Sodnomzundui Erdene of the opposition Democratic Party counted the majority of the votes in the national elections on Wednesday.

He will replace incumbent Khaltmaa Battulga, who was denied re-election after controversial amendments to the Mongolian constitution that limited presidents to one term of office. There are around two million eligible voters in the landlocked country between China and Russia, where politician instability is a permanent problem for the young democracy.
