Sri Lanka picked up a black box from a sinking ship

A black box was recovered from a sinking container ship off Sri Lanka, but a dive had to be canceled on Sunday to check for oil leaks, the Navy said. It is expected to help investigators review procedures and instructions prior to an accident. The Navy said that the divers were used for the third time on Sunday to examine the fuel tanks of the MV X-Press Pearl, but were unable to carry out their mission due to poor visibility. They did not notice any oil spills in the area, however, a marine official, who said that another dive will be attempted if the weather improves. Sri Lankan authorities hope the black box will provide details about the ship’s movements and its communications the port of the capital Colombo, where it had to dock.
