The government reported 985 new Covid-19 cases on Monday, a new daily record since the pandemic began, bringing the cumulative total to 33,610.

Except for five new infections, all other infections spread within Thailand.

No deaths were reported, and the death toll was 97.

The Center for Covid-19 Situation Management (CCSA) stated that Chiang Mai was led by 246 new cases spread, followed by Bangkok (137) and Chonburi (92). The figures for Chiang Mai include a big jump reported by the province on Sunday afternoon.

The CCSA’s national report showed that there were 57 more cases in Chiang Mai than on Sunday morning, and 99 fewer cases in Bangkok.

The Director of the Disease Control Department Opas Karnkawinpong said that the numbers after the Songkran holiday will determine the direction of the third wave of Covid-19 in Thailand.

Dr. Opas said: “The trend is still rising. We have to look at the data after the Songkran Festival.”

He said that most of the new cases are still related to nightclubs, and he warned that if students are less vigilant in personal activities and extracurricular activities (such as summer camps in remote areas), the resulting college summer vacation may lead to a surge in new cases.

Of the five import cases recorded on Monday, two were from Russia, two were from Germany, and one was from Sweden.
