The first female force in Iraq and the Middle East-the female Peshmerga fighters was launched in 1996 by the former president of Iraq, Jalal Talabani before assuming office.
Female Peshmerga fighters have primarily assumed protection and defending roles, not to mention that they worked in the medical and communication services throughout history. Those women endured a lot when they fought in the mountains, not to mention the agony they bore in prisons and after being displaced.
