Deir ez-Zor- Syria 05.11.2020 As Syrian regime forces and Iranian militias, backed by Russian airforces, took over the southeastern bank of the Euphrates, specifically Deir ez-Zor Governorate and a number of towns in the nearby areas, Iran embarked on implementing its plans aiming at tightening its grip over the governorate through touting Shi’ism and establishing communities based on sectarianism, by capitalizing on the people’s dire circumstances and needs. Iran’s decision to take over Deir ez-Zor Governorate, in particular, wasn’t random, given the geographical location of it, which links between Syria and Iraq. Therefore, Iran seeks to establish a presence that would maintain this strategic region, in addition to plans of expelling most of its residents and transforming its houses into military bases and food warehouse in Al Bukamal
